Florida Panthers D Bryan Allen has been nominated for the Masterton Trophy, awarded to “the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA).
Allen, 29, missed 80 games in 2008-09 with a knee injury. The Kinston, Ontario native returned to Florida’s line-up this year and has played in 73 games recording 13 points (4-9-13). Allen netted game-winning goals in victories against the San Jose Sharks on Mar. 13 and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 16. Allen leads the Panthers with 99 PIM, ranks second on the team with 135 blocked shots and is third with 120 hits.
Throughout his nine-year playing career Allen has played in 446 NHL contests with Vancouver (2000-06) and Florida (2007-10) registering 87 points (24-63-87) and 566 PIM.
Each of the 30 local chapters of the PHWA submitted nominations for the Masterton Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters to be designated as finalists.
