by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the Panthers have agreed to terms on a six-year contract with center Aleksander Barkov. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are thrilled to sign Sasha to a multi-year contract,” Tallon said. “He is a highly-skilled, intelligent and dynamic young center that plays an exceptional game at both ends of the ice. Sasha is an important part of the foundation of our future and a cornerstone player who is continuing to develop into one of the league’s elite centers.”

The 20-year-old Barkov has recorded 30 points (12-18-30) in 38 games this season with Florida, ranking third on the team in scoring. He leads all Panthers forwards with a plus-12 rating while also leading the team in power-play goals (4) and game-winning goals (4). He leads the NHL with three shootout game-deciding goals. During Florida’s franchise record 12-game winning streak (Dec. 15, 2015 – Jan. 10, 2016) Barkov led the Panthers with 14 points (6-8-14).

The 6-foot-3, 213-pound native of Tampere, Finland has recorded 90 points (36-54-90) in 163 career NHL games. He was originally selected by Florida in the first round (second overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
