SUNRISE, Fla. -Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that defenseman Zachary Uens has agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract commencing in the 2022-23 season.
"Zachary is a dynamic and skilled defenseman who excels at moving the puck," said Zito. "He showcased his competitiveness during his three seasons at Merrimack and we're looking forward to his continued growth and development taking place within the Panthers organization."
Uens, 20, skated in 34 NCAA games with Merrimack College (Hockey East), recording 19 points (2-17-19). He ranked second among Merrimack defensemen in assists and points.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound native of Belleville, Ontario, amassed 44 points (7-37-44) and 108 penalty minutes over 81 games (2019-20 to 2021-22) with Merrimack. He led Hockey East defensemen with 68 penalty minutes in his freshman season and ranked second among Merrimack blueliners with 14 assists and 18 points (4-14-18) over 34 games in 2019-20.
Prior to his college career, Uens produced 22 points (6-16-22) with the Wellington Dukes of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) in 2018-19, tied for the most goals by a defenseman on the club. He helped lead Wellington to a 2017-18 OJHL championship, recording eight points (4-4-8) over 25 postseason games.
Uens was selected by Florida in the fourth round (105th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.
