SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms with D Ryan Whitney on a one-year contract.
Whitney, 30, has appeared in 474 National Hockey League games, with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2005-2009), Anaheim Ducks (2008-2010) and Edmonton Oilers (2010-2013) registering 259 points (50-209-259) and 377 PIM. Last season while playing for the Oilers, Whitney finished with 13 points (4-9-13) in 34 games played.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman has recorded at least 25 points five times in his eight-year NHL playing career. He recorded a NHL career high in goals, assists and points (14-45-59) in 81 games while playing for Pittsburgh during the 2006-2007 campaign, finishing tied for sixth in points among all NHL defensemen and a 40 points (12-28-40) the following year.
The Boston, MA native played three seasons at Boston University, posting 59 points (16-43-59) in 107 games. Whitney was drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round (5th overall) in 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
