SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Brandon Montour from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a 2021 third-round draft pick.
"Brandon is a capable and talented right-shot defenseman who will have an immediate impact on our club," said Zito. "His two-way acumen and ability to play important minutes make him an exciting addition to the Panthers."
Montour, 26, appeared in 38 games with Buffalo this season, recording 14 points (5-9-14). The 6-foot, 194-pound native of Brantford, Ontario, led all Buffalo defensemen in goals (5), even-strength points (11), shorthanded points (2), while leading the team in blocked shots (53) and total even-strength time on ice (704:51).
Originally selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round (55th overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Montour has appeared in 281 career NHL games for Buffalo (2018-19 to 2020-21) and Anaheim (2016-17 to 2017-18), amassing 105 points (29-76-105).
Through his NHL career, Montour has scored at least five goals in a season four times and has eclipsed the 20-point mark twice, producing a career-best 32 points and nine goals in 2017-18.
A two-time American Hockey League (AHL) All-Star, Montour led all AHL defensemen and rookies in assists (45) in 2015-16.
Prior to his professional career, the UMass-Amherst alum was named to the 2014-15 Hockey East All-Rookie Team and was named United States Hockey League Defenseman of the Year and Player of the Year in 2013-14.
On the international stage, Montour won a Silver Medal with Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championship.
