SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers enter 2016 after the most successful December in franchise history. The Panthers went 11-3-0 in the month, recording 22 points to lead the NHL, marking the club’s highest win and point totals for any month in franchise history. The Panthers ended the month tying a franchise record seven-game win streak.
On Dec. 1, Florida was ranked 11th in the Eastern Conference, 6th in the Atlantic Division and 15 points behind the first place Montreal Canadiens. As of today, the Panthers rank first in the Atlantic Division and second in the Eastern Conference.
Florida’s goaltending duo of Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya backstopped the Panthers to their 11 wins. Luongo registered a 8-3-0 record, .929 save percentage, 1.80 goals against average and one shutout in 11 games played, while also recording a season-high six-game win streak. Montoya recorded a 3-0-0 record, .950 save percentage, 0.98 goals against average and only three goals against in three games played. The Panthers ranked fourth in the NHL this month for least goals allowed (25).
The Panthers 22-point total for December is the highest total in the NHL, while the club’s 11 wins rank first in the league. The Panthers gave the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals (10-1-1) their only regulation loss of the month on Dec. 10 (4-1 W).
Forward Aleksander Barkov recorded 13 points (5-8-13) in 14 games to lead the Panthers, defenseman Aaron Ekblad, forward Reilly Smith and Barkov each scored a team-leading five goals, while Jonathan Huberdeau led the team with nine assists.
