Fans Encouraged to Follow Ekblad on Facebook, Use #Ekblad4Calder Ahead of NHL Awards

The Florida Panthers announced today that in conjunction with the upcoming NHL Awards, Calder Memorial Trophy finalist Aaron Ekblad has launched a Facebook page. Fans can like the page at to follow the 2015 NHL Awards in Las Vegas.

“His Facebook page provides our fans with a unique way to follow along with the upcoming NHL Awards and get a behind the scenes look at Aaron,” said Florida Panthers Executive Vice President of Marketing Richard Adler. “Through new and emerging social media platforms, we plan to give fans the most in-depth access to their favorite Panthers players.”

The 2014 first overall pick set numerous franchise records in his rookie season, beginning on Nov. 1 vs. Philadelphia Flyers, when he became the youngest defenseman in franchise history to record a goal. The Belle River, Ontario, native finished the season as the team’s scoring leader among defensemen with 39 points (12-27—39) in 81 games played, setting new franchise records for goals, assists and points for rookie defensemen.

Ekblad’s 39 points are the third-highest point total earned by an 18-year old rookie defenseman all-time. Phil Housley (66 points, 1982-83) and Bobby Orr (41 points, 1966-67) rank first and second, respectively.

Ekblad was selected to compete in the 2015 NHL All-Star Game, where he led all All-Star defensemen in scoring with four points (0-4—4).

After the completion of his rookie year, Ekblad competed for Canada at the IIHF World Championship in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic, winning a gold medal and leading all defensemen in the tournament with four goals and finishing fourth overall in points recorded by defensemen (4-3—7).

The 19-year-old defenseman was recently named Best Panthers Player for 2015 by the Miami New Times ‘Best of’ list.
