Derek MacKenzie signs extension with Florida

The Florida Panthers signed forward Derek MacKenzie to a two-year contract extension Wednesday.
MacKenzie, 35, was entering the final season of a three-year contract. The extension is worth $2.7 million, an average annual value of $1.35 million, the Sun Sentinel reported.
The Sudbury, Ontario native had six goals (three game-winners) and 13 points in 64 games last season, led the Panthers in faceoff winning percentage (54.8), and was second in hits (154).

"Derek is a leader on our team and a true professional," Panthers general manager Tom Rowe told the Panthers website. "His experience, work ethic and character make him a respected presence on the ice and throughout our organization."
It was the latest move for the Panthers, who this offseason have signed defensemen Keith Yandle and Jason Demers, goalie James Reimer and re-signed defenseman Aaron Ekblad and forwards Vincent Trocheck and Reilly Smith. Florida also added unrestricted free agent forwards Colton Sceviour and Jonathan Marchessault.
