Consider it the training camp for the Panthers Ice Dancers.

On Saturday, hundreds of girls will show up at the BankAtlantic Center hoping to earn the title “Florida Panthers Ice Dancer”.

Now in its second year, the Panthers Ice Dancers, presented by Sziro Jewelry, is beginning to build a reputation around South Florida as one of the best squads in town. The auditions Saturday are expected to be challenging with a lot of great dancers all wanting to be a part of the Panthers.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the BankAtlantic Center with the actual auditions beginning promptly at noon. Auditions are open to the public

Just this past week the Panthers Ice Dancers Presented by Sziro Jewelry hired a new Director for the 2007-08 squad, Nichole Genchi. Nichole was the Ice Dancers Captain this past season and she plans on directing and dancing this year.

So what is the new Ice Dancers Director looking for in this year’s squad?

“I will be looking for girls that stand out with their personality and their dancing,” Genchi said. “They need to do something that catches our eye. They have to have nice personality charisma, and we need to see potential. We need to see potential.”

Last summer, Genchi was just the average girl, who tried out for a spot on the inaugural squad. After making the team, she excelled and was named Captain of the squad. She knows what it takes to be a Panthers Ice Dancer.

“I’d just tell the girls to have fun this weekend. Be yourself and shine in your own way,” Genchi said. “You won’t be able to fake a personality all year so why not just be yourself at the auditions.”

Genchi won’t be the only one making the decisions. A panel of celebrities judges will be on hand to help decide this year’s team. Guest judges include Olli and Katerina Jokinen, Mike and Amber Van Ryn, ‘J’ from 93ROCK and others.

The first step at the audition process will be a freestyle routine. The judges will then narrow the field to a select number who will be taught choreography to a song and asked to perform that dance in front of the panel.

There will be 18 girls finally selected to become part of the 2007-08 Panthers Ice Dancers Presented by Sziro Jewelry.

“I have the final say in who makes the team, but I will listen to what all the celebrity judges have to say,” Genchi said. I’m hopefully going to find 18 girls. There are 7 girls returning from last year but no one is guaranteed a spot.
