SUNRISE, Fla. – The National Hockey League announced today that D Aaron Ekblad has been named to the roster for the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game that will be held at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, Jan. 25. Other festivities during the All-Star weekend include the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition that will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24 and the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft that will be held on Friday, Jan. 23.
Ekblad was selected as one of six rookies to participate in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™. The first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft leads all rookie defensemen and Panthers defensemen with 25 points (6-19—25). Ekblad is also tied for fourth in scoring among rookies. The Belle River, Ontario, native has eclipsed Florida’s franchise assist (13) and overall point scoring (21) records, set by a rookie defensemen in a single season.
Ekblad joins teammate G Roberto Luongo as the two Florida players to be named to the NHL All-Star Roster. The 18-year old defenseman is just one of two rookies selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game, joining F Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators. The 2015 All-Star game marks the first time since 2000 (Pavel Bure, Viktor Kozlov, Ray Whitney) that the Florida Panthers have had multiple players participate in the match-up.
