#CatsDraft Liveblog

by Jameson Olive and Kyle Morrison / Florida Panthers

Welcome to our Day 2 coverage of the 2016 NHL Draft! A quick refresher: last night, the Cats kicked off their draft by selecting Finnish forward Henrik Borgström, a 6-foot-3 center who put up 55 points last season for HIFK U20. The 18-year-old Finn was quite excited to join the Cats.

Borgström is committed to the University of Denver.

The Cats came into today holding the 33rd overall pick, but they flipped that pick – along with defenseman Dmitry Kulikov – to Buffalo for defenseman Mark Pysyk, along with picks 38 and 89 in this year's draft.

With the 38th overall pick in the draft, the Panthers tapped one of the most dynamic goal scorers remaining on the board, selecting forward Adam Mascherin from the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.

At 5-foot-9, 192-pounds, Mascherin has a nose for the net and doesn’t hesitate when presented with a scoring opportunity, ranking second among draft-eligible forwards in shots on goal (258) and third in primary points per game (.985).

After scoring 29 points as a rookie in 2014-15, the Toronto, Ontario native recorded 81 points (35-46--81) in 65 regular-season games, while also adding six goals and six assists in nine postseason games, for the Rangers this past season.

With the 89th overall pick in the draft, the Panthers looked overseas to bolster their blueline, selecting defenseman Linus Nässén from Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League.

At 6-foot, 172-pounds, Nässén recorded 21 points (5-16—21) in 46 games for Lulea HF of the J20 SuperElit, which is the highest-level junior ice hockey league in Sweden. He also competed in 10 games as a rookie for Lulea HF in Sweden’s top professional league in 2015-16.

At the 2016 IIHF U18 World Junior Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Nässén tallied three assists in eight games to help lead Sweden capture a silver medal.

With the 94th overall pick in the draft, the Panthers added a substantial amount of speed to their prospect pool, selecting lightning-quick center Jonathan Ang from the OHL’s Peterborough Petes.

At the 2016 NHL Scouting Combine, Ang impressed scouts with Top 10 rankings in six of fifteen categories, including the Wingate Cycle Test, standing long jump and pro agility shuttle run. His pull-up result -- 15 reps -- was the most of any prospect in the test's three-year history at the combine.

After scoring 20 points as a rookie in 2014-15, the 5-foot-11, 163-pound native of Markham, Ontario recorded 49 points (21-28--49) in 68 regular-season games, while also adding three goals and six assists in seven postseason games, for the Petes this past season.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

With the 114th overall pick in the draft, the Panthers added a player who already knows his way around the BB&T Center, selecting defenseman Riley Stillman from the OHL’s Oshawa Generals.

One of several players in this year’s draft with a Panther pedigree, Riley’s father, Cory, recorded 109 points (39-70—109) in 165 games for the Panthers from 2008-11.

A mobile, two-way blueliner, Stillman’s offensive upside was on full display during his rookie season with Oshawa, scoring six goals and 21 points in 62 games.

With the 175th overall pick in the draft, the Panthers added an older player with a lot to offer, selecting 21-year-old forward Maxim Mamin from CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League.

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound native of Moscow, Russia has been competing one of the premier professional ice hockey leagues in Europe and Asia over the past two seasons, recording 17 points (9-8—17) in 87 games since making his debut with CSKA Moscow in 2014.
