Panthers to Play York University Today at 1 p.m. in Tournament Finale
TORONTO, ON - In a back and forth game that saw three lead changes, the Florida Panthers (1-2) prospects were defeated 5-3 by the Toronto Maple Leafs (3-0) rookie squad on Monday at Ricoh Colesium. The Panthers complete the 2006 Toronto rookie tournament today when they take on York University at 1 p.m.
The Panthers prospects netted the first goal of the game when D Steve Czech launched a shot from the point that beat Toronto netminder Justin Pogge at 8:43. Less than a minute later, the Maple Leafs tied the game at one when D Jamie Sifers recorded his second goal of the tournament. The Cats regained the lead at 12:22 when RW Tyler McGregor fired a shot past Pogge for his first goal of the tournament.
In the second period, Maple Leafs LW Jiri Tlustky knotted the game at two scoring on a shot that slipped past Cats G Tyler Plante at 4:12. After missing on penalty shot opportunity, LW David Booth put Florida ahead again with a wrist shot that beat Pogge at 6:52. Toronto tied the game for the third time when LW John Mitchell tallied his tournament leading fifth goal late in the second period.
The Leafs grabbed their first lead of the game early in the final period when LW Alex Foster scored the eventual game-winner at 5:56. Tlustky added an empty net tally late in the third period to close out the scoring for the night.
Plante suffered the loss turning away 21 shots, while Pogge earned the win stopping 26 shots. The Maple Leafs will play the Montreal Canadiens on Monday at 4 p.m. in the championship game.
