Forecast-16x9-10-25-21

The Panthers are turning a lot of heads around the NHL.
Off to their best start in franchise history, the team enters this week sitting at 5-0-0 and in first place in the Atlantic Division after defeating a string of strong teams in the Penguins, Islanders, Lightning, Avalanche and Flyers by a combined score of 22-9 to open their 2021-22 campaign.

"It's really important that we got off to a good start and really important that we were able to show our stuff against some great teams, but it's going to get harder and harder as we go," Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad said Monday. "We're looking at the next task at hand."
That next task includes a very busy week.
Set to take the ice for four games over the next six days, the Panthers will host the Coyotes on Monday and the Bruins on Wednesday at FLA Live Arena before heading out of town for two games against the Red Wings and Bruins (them again!) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
And with Halloween coming up, they're hoping more treats than tricks are on the horizon.
"We know how the start is really important," Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau said. "Obviously, having five wins right now is huge for us. It's been a really good start. We've played some good teams. This has been a big test, but I think we've gotten over that hump."
From huge games to a haunted house, read below to see what this week has in store.

THE GAMES

Monday: Arizona Coyotes, 7:00 p.m.
With a chance to extend their season-opening winning streak to six games, the Panthers will host the slumping Coyotes (0-4-1) at FLA Live Arena on Monday. Yet to win a game, Arizona has been outscored 24-8 so far this season, including a 3-0 loss to the Islanders on Saturday. Shayne Gostisbehere leads the team in scoring with four points, while Clayton Keller and Phil Kessel are tied for second with three points each. Entering this week, the Coyotes have scored just five goals over their last three games, while giving up 15 in that same span. Despite these struggles, however, they've been a middle-of-the-pack team in terms of possession, with their 50.58 CF% placing them 18th in the NHL. For the Panthers, it certainly wouldn't be surprising to see Jonathan Huberdeau pick up a point or two in this contest. Cracking the scoresheet in four of five games this season, the playmaking dynamo leads the team in scoring with six points (two goals, four assists). In his career against Arizona, he's dished out seven assists in 10 contests.

Wednesday: Boston Bruins, 7:00 p.m.
Wrapping up their quick two-game homestand, the Panthers will get their first look at a key division rival when they host the Bruins (3-1-0) at FLA Live Arena on Wednesday. With Linus Ullmark manning the crease in each of the last two games, Boston enters this week riding high after wins over the Sabres and Sharks. In Sunday's victory over San Jose, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak each had a goal and an assist, while Ullmark made 23 saves. Marchand leads the team in goals (4) and points (7). Just behind him, Pastrnak has tallied five points (two goals, three assists). Doing a great job of shutting down opposing power plays, the Bruins rank tied for seventh in the league on the penalty kill with an 85.7% success rate. Likely to play a big role on both sides of the puck, look for Aaron Ekblad to step up for the Panthers in this game. Leading the team's defensemen in scoring with five points (two goals, three assists), he also paces the team in plus/minus (+8), shots on goal (19) and average ice time per game (25:24). In 23 career games against Boston, he's produced 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) and a +5 rating.

Friday: at Detroit Red Wings, 7:00 p.m.
Opening up a back-to-back set on the road, the Panthers will make their first stop in the Motor City for a matchup against the Red Wings (3-2-1) at Little Caesars Arena on Friday. Entering this week, Detroit has won three of its last five games, including a 6-3 victory at Chicago on Sunday. In that game, rookie Lucas Raymond scored a hat trick, Tyler Bertuzzi notched a goal and two assists, Dylan Larkin had three helpers and Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 32 of 35 shots in net. The centerpiece of the Red Wings offense, Bertuzzi leads the team in goals (6) and points (9), while also accumulating a +8 rating. Taking six of eight games from Detroit last season, the Panthers will look to pick up right where they left off in this contest. With that in mind, keep an eye on captain Aleksander Barkov. Recording multiple points in two of his last three games, he currently ranks tied for second on the team in scoring with five points (two goals, three assists). In 31 career games against the Red Wings, he's racked up 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists).

Saturday: at Boston Bruins, 7:00 p.m.
Closing out both a busy week and a back-to-back set, the Panthers will visit the Bruins (3-1-0) at TD Garden on Saturday. Set to square off four times throughout this season, it's notable that these two teams will get two of those games out of the way within the span of just a few days. Not playing each other at all last season due to the pandemic-altered schedule, the Panthers went 1-1-1 during their last semi-full series against the Bruins back in 2019-20. In this matchup, let's go with Carter Verhaeghe as a player to watch for the Cats. Riding a four-game point streak entering this week, the versatile forward has notched five points (three goals, two assists) in that span. Only in his third season in the NHL, he's only faced Boston twice in his career.

PROSPECT SPOTLIGHT

Ty Smilanic has been doing what he does best at the outset of his sophomore season.
Lighting the lamp.
After earning a spot on the ECAC's All-Rookie Team in 2020-21, the 19-year-old forward has already scored a pair of goals in five games with No. 7 Quinnipiac so far this season, including burying a key one-timer during the team's lopsided 5-2 win over No. 6 North Dakota on Friday.

Selected by the Panthers in the third round (74th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, Smilanic tallied 21 points in 29 games as a freshman last season, including pacing NCAA rookies with 14 goals.

CATS CLIP OF THE WEEK

Jonathan Huberdeau had to get creative to net this shorthanded goal in Philadelphia.
"He stuck with it, and it was a pretty nifty play," coach Joel Quenneville said afterward.
