SUNRISE, Fla. – The National Hockey League announced today that the Florida Panthers will open the home portion of its 2008-09 schedule on Saturday, Oct. 11 vs. Atlanta at 7:00 p.m. at the BankAtlantic Center. Florida will open its season the night before against the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the RBC Center.
The Panthers will play all 29 NHL teams this season as part of the new NHL scheduling format. Florida will play 12 Western Conference teams one time, either at home or on the road. The Cats will take on three Western Conference teams (Nashville, St. Louis, Dallas) twice, once at home and once on the road.
The Panthers complete 2008-09 schedule will be released tomorrow afternoon.
Florida Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin announced today C Stefan Meyer has accepted his qualifying offer.
“Stefan showed good improvement last season and had the opportunity to make his NHL debut and spend some time competing at the NHL level,” said Martin. “We look forward to his continued development and growth within our organization.”
Meyer, 23, was recalled from Rochester (AHL) two times last season, making his NHL debut on Oct. 24 vs. Philadelphia and appearing in four games with the Panthers. He played in 70 games with Rochester scoring 21 goals with 19 assists and 77 PIM. His 21 goals ranked third best on the Americans.
Meyer was selected by the Panthers in the second round (55th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
