A captain on the ice and on the sea, Willie Mitchell has stayed busy this offseason. Residing in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with his wife and beagle, Mitchell spends a lot of time out on the water. The 38-year-old defenseman has also spent time this off season discussing ocean conservation. On World Oceans Day (June 8), Mitchell visited the Billfish Foundation headquarters and became a member of the group in order to pursue his passion of the ocean in Ft Lauderdale.
Fox Sports Florida and FloridaPanthers.com joined Mitchell on a fishing trip on June 9 to learn more about his passion. Full coverage of this trip can be seen on the Inside the Panthers special which airs on June 18.
“I had to get used to the Florida waters. Different fish, different currents. I didn’t have a boat in Los Angeles. Now I’m like, what was I thinking?,” said Mitchell.
An outdoor enthusiast, Mitchell had a number of experiences on the sea to share, but a recent Bahamas trip took the cake.
“A few weeks ago my wife and I took the boat to Abaco and while she stayed on the boat, I went snorkeling. When I got back on the boat I realized my wedding ring was gone. Megan grabbed the snorkeling gear and dove right in. She found my ring perfectly placed on a rock. It was a miracle.” Click here to see more photos on the water with the Captain.
