by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
The United States defeated Slovakia 4-2 on Wednesday at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Russia. The Americans are now 3-1 in the tournament and will face Germany on Saturday.

Germany is coming off a stunning win 2-0 over the Czech Republic on Thursday. Florida Panthers LW Rostislav Olesz is on the Czech Republic team (3-1) and has a goal and two assists in the country's first four games. The Czech’s are looking to make it to their third consecutive Championship game and will now face Slovakia on Saturday.

Three Panthers players are participating in the World Championship (Olesz-CZE, Ville Peltonen-FIN and Cory Murphy-CAN), as well as Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin. Martin’s Team Canada is 3-0 after winning Wednesday 5-4 over Slovakia. Panthers D Cory Murphy had a power play goal in the first period and assisted on Canada’s game-winning goal in the third period. He has one goal and three assists in three games which is tied for the team lead. His plus-three rating in three games also tops Canada’s roster. Canada will take on Belarus in their next game on Friday.

Also putting on a strong showing are the 2006 Olympic Silver Medalists, Finland. Even without Panthers Captain Olli Jokinen in the lineup for his home country, the Finns put on two strong performances and defeated Switzerland 2-0 Thursday. Finland (3-1), will now face Italy on Saturday.

Part of the reason for the Finns success is Panthers LW Ville Peltonen, who has two goals and four assists in the first four games of the World Championship. Peltonen, who is playing in his 12th World Championship, is providing the veteran leadership for Finland they were hoping for from him.
