All Three Panthers in World's Advance to Quarterfinals

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Team Canada (6-0) came out firing on Monday as they scored four first period goals en-route to a 6-3 victory over the United States (4-2).  In one of the fastest goals ever scored in a World Championship, Canada’s Jay McClement lit the lamp only eight seconds into the first period.  Matthew Lombardi added a hat trick, and Mike Cammalleri scored two goals.  Florida Panthers D Cory Murphy has a goal and four assists with a rating of plus-five thus far in the tournament.  With the victory over the United States, Canada is now the top seed for the quarterfinals and will play Switzerland (3-3) on Thursday.  The United States will take on Finland in their quarterfinal matchup.

Finland (4-2) was downed 1-0 by Sweden (5-1) on Sunday, but they’ve still clinched a quarterfinals birth.  Panthers LW Ville Peltonen has been brilliant for Finland offensively with two goals and five assists to date.  Peltonen may get the opportunity to face Panthers teammate F Rostislav Olesz as the Czech Republic (3-3) also advanced to the quarterfinals. Olesz has two goals and three assists.  His Czech team will take on host Russia (6-0) in their quarterfinal game this Wednesday.  Russia will get superstar Alexander Ovechkin back from his one-game suspension Wednesday after he was suspended one game for a hit to the head on Switzerland’s Valentin Wirz.  Sweden takes on Slovakia (5-1) in the other Wednesday game.
