ABOUT LAST NIGHT is the morning-after recap of last night’s Florida Panthers game produced by “Hockey Pat” McGrath, a lifelong Cats fan who previously wrote for the Florida Panthers themed blog “TheRatTrick”. It is a followup to Hockey Pat’s hilariously informative gameday article: THE LOWDOWN.

RED WINGS 3, PANTHERS 1
The Panthers fell to the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1 in their final home game before the Olympic break. Scottie Upshall gave the Panthers a 1-0 first period lead but the Wings stormed back in the second with goals from Daniel Alfredsson and Gustav Nyquist. Florida made a third period push but the Wings defense held strong and Brian Lashoff scored on an empty net with 20 seconds left to put the game to bed. Here is what you may have missed from last night….

Panthers on Jeopardy
That was an easy question
See even after a loss there are positives to hang your hat on….now can we wrap up Battle of the Decades and bring back Arthur Chu!

Play of the Day
There are a couple things I love about this play. First the fact that the goal comes right as Scottie Upshall is released from the penalty box. Teams on a penalty kill love to look for the guy coming out of the box for potential breakaways but the play requires perfect timing and it is rarely pulled off successfully.
Second I love how Upshall gathers the puck out of the air on the move. It is a play that requires so much skill and hand-eye coordination. While moving forward, Upshall manages to look back, find the puck speeding his way at waist level and knock it out of the air right to his stick just as he crosses the blue-line.
Finally, no play is complete without a great finish and Scottie gets clinical here with the quick release going 5-hole on Jimmy Howard.
RED Hot Rivalry?
With their move to the new Atlantic Division this season, the Panthers are cultivating brand new rivalries with teams they previously saw very little of. The Red Wings, who moved over from the Western Conference, are one of those teams.
Prior to this season, the Cats and Wings met 23 times.
Last night marked the fifth and final meeting between the two teams this season and despite the loss, Florida still took the season series winning three of five games. So, after year one, what is the temperature of the Panthers-Red Wings rivalry?
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being Harry Dune and Lloyd Christmas and 10 being Gandalf vs. the Balrog, I would give the rivalry a solid 7, the equivalent of the Sandlot crew vs. the travel team….
Friday Long Read:
In honor of the Sochi Olympics getting underway here is a piece from the legendary George Plimpton describing the scene at the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. Due to Cold War tensions, the Moscow games were boycotted by the United States. The 2014 Sochi games will be the first Olympics held in Russia since those 1980 games.
That’s all for now. The Panthers are back in action tonight in Carolina to take on the Hurricanes. Keep an eye out for the pre-game Lowdown later today.
