About Last Night: Panthers 4, Maple Leafs 1

by "Hockey Pat" McGrath / Florida Panthers

ABOUT LAST NIGHT is the morning-after recap of last night’s Florida Panthers game produced by “Hockey Pat” McGrath, a lifelong Cats fan who previously wrote for the Florida Panthers themed blog “TheRatTrick”. It is a followup to Hockey Pat’s hilariously informative gameday article: THE LOWDOWN

The contents of ABOUT LAST NIGHT and all opinions expressed therein are solely those of Hockey Pat and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Florida Panthers or Sunrise Sports & Entertainment LLC. Having said that, if you find yourself laughing or smiling as you read ABOUT LAST NIGHT, feel free to thank us. We accept thank you notes, tweets and ticket purchases.

(That means we won.)

Quote of the day:

“You’re so money and you don’t even know it”.

The Toronto Maple Leafs ran into a buzz-saw last night as they were completely and utterly dominated by the Florida Panthers. It was quite the performance from Team Red, as they outshot Team Blue 48-21…yes you read that right, 48 shots, a season high. Now that’s something Lil’ John would appreciate.

Here is what you may have missed from last night….

Huby Take-Down:

Yesterday I picked Jonathan Huberdeau as my “Young Gun Lead Pipe Lock of the Night”. Huberdeau came through with an assist, his 14th of the season, but he also got in a scrap, something I never would have predicted. Young Huberdeau acquitted himself quite well in his first career NHL fight as he got the best of Maple Leaf defenseman Jake Gardiner, who was also taking part in his first career tilt (with his dad in the stands, no less!). Here is the take-down in all its glory:

Tale of the tape: Jonathan Huberdeau (6’1”, 177lbs.) vs. Jake Gardiner (6’2”, 184 lbs.)

The View From The Other Side:

Clarkson comes back, Leafs lose:

Rematch on NHL 94?

Rapid Fire Round: The Cats cooled down the red hot Leafs like….

….the Wolf cools down Jules and Vincent

….like the White Walkers cool down a Crow straying too far from the wall

….like Joey Tribbiani cooled down after he left Friends

….like M. Night Shyamalan ever since Signs

….like the Grammy’s tried to cool down Kendrick Lamar

….like Chumbawamba ever since Tubthumping

Stat Corner:

You do not need stats to tell you the Panthers dominated last night. The Leafs struggled all game to sustain any offensive pressure and the shot totals back that up. Florida accumulated a single-game season high in shots with 48. The “advanced stats” (look up “#fancystats” on Twitter to learn more) tell the same story. Here is a look at last night’s Corsi numbers, courtesy of our new friend at @ExtraSkater:

  1st Per. 2nd Per. 3rd Per. Total
Panthers 74.3 69.2 48.7 63.4
Maple Leafs 25.7 30.8 51.3 36.4

The Panthers recorded 63.4% of all the shots taken (including blocked and missed shots) in last night’s game. Out of the 112 shots fired overall, 71 were taken by Cats.

Four Lines Deep:

To be successful in the NHL, having four reliable lines is a must. A huge difference in last night’s win was the Panthers ability to roll four lines all game compared to the Leafs reliance on their top three lines.

Last night the Panthers’ fourth line of Scott Gomez, Shawn Matthias and Jesse Winchester recorded 12:49, 12:20 and 13:08 of total ice-time respectively while the Leafs’ trio of Jerred Smithson, Colton Orr and Troy Bodie recorded only 5:52, 7:27 and 6:30 respectively. On top of that the Cats got three points from their fourth line (a goal for Matthias and Winchester as well as an assist for Gomez) while the Leafs’ 4th line was awarded no points (may god have mercy on their souls):

Until next time, Go Cats Go, and thanks for joining us on this edition of About Last Night, Toronto! It was fun.
