2016 NHL Draft order announced

by Adam Kimelman / Florida Panthers

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres each have 11 picks at the 2016 NHL Draft, which is at First Niagara Center in Buffalo on June 24-25.

The first round is June 24 (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports). Rounds 2-7 are June 25 (10 a.m. ET; NHLN, SN).

Toronto won the NHL Draft Lottery on April 30 and has the No. 1 pick for the first time since 1985, when it selected forward Wendel Clark.

The Maple Leafs are expected to take center Auston Matthews with the first pick. The 6-foot-2, 216-pound center played with Zurich in National League A, Switzerland's top professional league, this season and is No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of international skaters eligible for the 2016 draft.

Matthews, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., excelled for the United States at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship and World Championship; he led the U.S. with six goals and tied for the lead with nine points in 10 games at the latter tournament. Matthews was named to Team North America for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, which will be played at Air Canada Centre in Toronto starting Sept. 17.

The Maple Leafs have three picks in the first two rounds and seven of the first 101 selections. They have two picks each in rounds two, three and four. They initially had 12 picks but traded No. 30 in the first round to the Anaheim Ducks for goaltender Frederik Andersen on June 20.

The Sabres, who are hosting the draft for the first time since 1998, have six of the first 99 selections, including No. 8 in the first round and three third-round picks. They traded an additional fourth-round pick to the Nashville Predators for the rights to unsigned draft pick Jimmy Vesey on Monday.

The Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers each have 10 picks. The Flames have the sixth pick in the first round and three selections in the second. The Flyers have three picks in the first two rounds, starting with the 18th pick.

Among the busiest teams early in the draft will be the Carolina Hurricanes, who have six of the first 75 choices, and the Winnipeg Jets, who own three of the first 36, including Nos. 2 and 22 in the first round.

In addition to the Ducks, who also have the 24th pick in the first round, four other teams have multiple first-round picks.

The Jets acquired the No. 22 pick from the Chicago Blackhawks in the trade for forward Andrew Ladd on Feb. 22.

The Arizona Coyotes have eight picks, starting with No. 7 in the first round. They also have the New York Rangers' selection at No. 20, acquired in the trade for defenseman Keith Yandle on March 1, 2015.

The Hurricanes added the No. 21 pick from the Los Angeles Kings in a trade for defenseman Andrej Sekera on Feb. 25, 2015, to go along with the No. 13 selection.

The Boston Bruins own the San Jose Sharks' pick at No. 29, acquired in the trade for goaltender Martin Jones on June 30, 2015. They also have the No. 14 pick.
