  Jared Cowen

The Lowdown:
   6-5, 220
   Defenseman
   Spokane (Western Hockey League)
   DOB: 1-25-91 – Saskatoon.
   Final rank: 9. Midterm rank: 7 (NA-S)

The Shinny:
The giant’s 2008-09 season ended in January due to a knee injury. At the time of the injury, he had a plus-15 and 21 points (14 assists) in 48 games and was selected to participate in the Canadien Hockey League’s Top Prospects game. Helped Spokane to a Memorial Cup championship in 2008. He was a plus-6 in 21 playoff games. Served as an alternate captain for Team Canada at the 2008 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament. Selected first overall by Spokane in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft.

NHL Central Scouting’s E.J. McGuire: “Made his name last year as a Memorial Cup winning member of the Spokane Chiefs and the comparisons that were thrown around at that time were that of Zdeno Chara. Physically, he looks big, strong and rangy. Offensively, he has that kind of contribution and if he, despite the pressure that we are putting on him, blossoms into half the player that Chara is, he’s going to be a solid NHL player for years to come.”

Spokane head coach Hardy Sauter:  “Most of the people that talk with our organization are saying that the injury won’t help his positioning in the draft, but it’s not going to hurt, either. I think it’s a can’t-miss for any team that takes him, and if someone passes him up, I’d love to know how good the player is that they passed him up for.”

Cowen on Cowen: “Hopefully, people will see I do everything well. I practice a lot in the summer and during the season. I think my biggest asset could be skating. For a bigger guy I think I skate pretty smoothly. I have certain spots I have to work on more often, like my hands and stuff like shooting. That’s something I key on during practice.”
