USA 4, CANADA 1
Chris Kreider scored twice and Nick Bonino notched the game-winner on the power play to propel Team USA to a 4-1 victory in Sunday's bronze medal game at the 2018 IIHF World Championship.
Team USA earns hardware for the first time since 2015 when they captured bronze in the Czech Republic. The nation wins its third bronze in 14 years.
Canada places fourth in the tournament, failing to win a medal after doing so at the past three tournaments. They've also dropped their last four bronze medal matches.
Oilers Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Darnell Nurse were all held off the scoresheet.
McDavid ends the circuit with five goals, 12 assists and 17 points in 10 games. He placed third in tournament scoring.
Nugent-Hopkins finishes with five goals, three assists and eight points in 10 outings. He flanked McDavid all tournament, receiving Player of the Game honours in the quarter-finals and also being named one of Team Canada's three best players.
Nurse concludes the event with one assist in 10 games.
Kreider and Canada goalie Curtis McElhinney were named Players of the Game.
New York Rangers forward Kreider broke a scoreless deadlock in the second period on Team USA's fifth consecutive man-advantage. The winger scooped up a loose puck McDavid couldn't corral then stretched McElhinney out on his backhand.
San Jose Sharks defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic notched the equalizer for Canada in the second, slipping the puck past Keith Kinkaid to make it 1-1 entering the third.
Bonino deposited a rebound on the man-advantage in the final 20 then Team USA added a pair of empty-netters to secure the victory.
SWEDEN 3, SWITZERLAND 2 (SO)
Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Filip Forsberg scored in the shootout to win Sweden their second consecutive gold medal at the IIHF World Championship, defeating Switzerland 3-2 in the tournament final.
Sven Andrighetto scored the lone shootout goal for Switzerland, who take home the silver medal.
Oilers defender Adam Larsson ends the tournament with a gold medal, one goal and two assists in 10 games.
The two sides played out to an even-keeled finale, remaining tied after the first and second periods. Nino Niederreiter and Gustav Nyquist traded goals in the opening 20, then Timo Meier and Mika Zibanejad did so again in the middle frame.
Without a go-ahead goal in the third, the teams continued playing into an extra overtime period.
In overtime, Larsson - urged to
activate offensively by his Swedish head coach
- had a few chances to end it. He nearly tipped one home from a slap pass from Nyquist and then hit the post with a slap shot as 2.6 seconds remained in the extra stanza.
