CANADA 3, GERMANY 0
Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins connected on the first and second goals of the game as Canada blanked an already-eliminated Germany 3-0 to secure their spot in the IIHF World Championship quarter-finals.
Both Oilers provided helpers on Brayden Schenn's opener just 20 seconds into the first frame before working in tandem to notch Nugent-Hopkins his fourth goal of the tournament half-way through the second.
Tyson Jost rounded out the scoring with his fourth goal, matching Nuge's total and tying the team lead for plus-minus at plus-8 with McDavid and St. Albert product Colton Parayko.
The Canadians wait to see which of the Group A frontrunners they'll face in Russia or Sweden on Thursday as the two compete for first place later this afternoon.
Leon Draisaitl and Germany will look back on the 2018 World Championship as a missed opportunity after two shootout losses to begin the tournament to Denmark and Norway made the rest of the tournament an uphill battle. The Oilers forward finishes his Worlds campaign with a team-high nine points (2G, 9A), four more than his next-best teammate.
RUSSIA 1, SWEDEN 3
It's official: Russia will face Canada in the quarter-finals after a 3-1 win for Sweden means Adam Larsson and his nation come out on top in the race that started back on Day 1 of the World Championship for top spot in Group B.
The Swedes take on Latvia in their quarter-final matchup after sneaking past hosts Denmark for the fourth and final spot in the medal round beginning Thursday.
An early lead for Russia from the stick of Kirill Kaprizov was erased with second-period goals from Sweden's leading scorers Mika Zibanejad and Rickard Rakell before Mattias Ekholm added an empty-net goal to seal the three points and top seed in the medal round for the Swedes.
Russia's meeting will Canada will be a rematch of last tournament's semi-final in Cologne, a game the Russian won en route to their tournament-leading 27th gold medal at the IIHF World Championship.
LATVIA 1, DENMARK 0
Heartbreak for Denmark.
This year's tournament hosts are out after a stellar 28-save shutout performance in between the pipes by Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins provided the relief needed to allow Andris Dzerins' first-period goal to stand as the game winner.
The Latvians advance to their first quarter-final since they did it in 2009 in Bern and Kloten, Switzerland when they lost out to Canada 4-2, representing a huge leap forward for the program in this year's World Championship.
