EDMONTON, AB -Last year, he was a young role player. This year, he'll be a veteran leader.
Oilers defence prospect Philip Broberg has been named to Sweden's preliminary roster for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship to be played at Rogers Place in Edmonton from Dec. 25 to Jan. 5.
The 19-year-old is on track to compete in his third consecutive World Juniors after making the national team in both of the previous years as well. He contributed one assist in four games in 2019 and one goal in seven games in 2020 as Tre Kronor took home bronze. Broberg was part of the team's primary shutdown defence pairing and logged ample time on the penalty kill.
He has scored two goals and five assists in 21 games on loan with Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League so far this season, one year removed from tallying one goal and seven assists in 45 games in 2019-20. Broberg was also on the Oilers Return To Play roster this past summer.
The Swedish U-20 national team will conduct its final selection camp Dec. 6-13 before travelling to Edmonton for the tournament, which will be contested in a secure bubble with no spectators.
