WJC ON LOCATION: It all starts today

by Marc Ciampa / Edmonton Oilers
Five Oilers prospects will be taking part in the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships in Edmonton and Calgary. Starting today will we provide daily reports with staff on location in both Alberta cities to provide video, written features and more through to the end of the tournament.

The Oilers prospects suiting up are forward Kristians Pelss of Latvia and four defencemen: Oscar Klefbom for Sweden, Martin Marincin and Martin Gernat for Slovakia and David Musil for Czech Republic.

We will be keeping tabs on all five Oilers prospects as well as the exploits of Team Canada as the tournament progresses

This is the first U20 World Juniors for Kristians Pelss at the top level. The Edmonton Oil Kings forward and Oilers 2010 7th rounder helped lead Latvia to a Division I title last year, earning his country a birth in this year's tournament. In 34 games, Pelss has 13 goals and 25 points for the WHL Oil Kings this season.

Oscar Klefbom was drafted in the first round by the Oilers in 2011, 19th overall. After opening the season with an injury, he has played in 17 games with Farjestads so far, picking up a couple of penalty minutes. It is his first appearance with Sweden at the World Juniors.

Marincin has 16 points in 28 games so far this season with Prince George (WHL). It is his third World Juniors tourney. He picked up one assist in six games in 2009 in Saskatoon. Last year, his stint was cut short by an early-tournament suspension.

Gernat joins Marincin on the Slovakian blueline to rank among the league-leaders for blueliners. He has 25 points in 31 games during an impressive rookie season with the Oil Kings. It is the first World Juniors tournament for the 18-year-old 6'5" Slovakian drafted in the ffith round, 122nd overall in 2011.

The lone Oilers prospect playing in the Edmonton-based Group B is David Musil. Musil, drafted in the second round, 31st overlal, by the Oilers in this past June's NHL Entry Draft, has one goal and 16 points in 35 games with a +8 rating for the Vancouver Giants of the WHL.
