The Western Hockey League recently announced their respective finalists for the WHL Defenceman of the Year and the winner will be announced at the 2009 WHL awards luncheon in Edmonton on April 29th at the Northlands Agricom.
Representing the Eastern Conference is Calgary Hitmen defenceman Paul Postma. The 2007 seventh round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers had a breakout season for the Hitmen leading all WHL d-men in scoring with 23 goals and 84 points. His +67 rating was tops in the WHL as well. Postma recently signed a three-year entry level contract with Atlanta and has helped guide the Hitmen to the Eastern Conference Final for the second straight year.
The Western Conference nominee is Vancouver Giants defenceman Jonathan Blum. The 19-year-old from Rancho Santa Margarita, CA finished third in scoring amongst WHL defenceman. In just 51 games, the 2007 Nashville Predators first round pick recorded 66 points, including 16 goals. The Giants captain also represented the United States for a second straight year. Blum was the first ever player from the state of California to be taken in the first round when Nashville selected him 23rd overall in 2007.
