Under the Scope: Oilers vs Wings

by Kristi Hennessy / Edmonton Oilers
THE TURNING POINT

The game started off very one-sided in favor of the Oilers. The Wings had a very poor start to their game and the Oilers fed off of it. They got the crowd into the game early and didn't hold back as they went up 4-0 on the Wings. It was 6:15 of the second period when Helm scored that things began to flip in favor of Detroit.  Where the game really flipped was in the third period with the Wings slotting a pair of goals just over a minute apart. They startled the Oilers and the crowd at Rexall. Just like that, they were within one goal down 5-4. A handful of minutes later, they had no mercy for the Oilers and snuck the fifth and game tying goal behind Khabibulin.

TOP PERFORMERS

OILERS -After being held pointless in the past two games, Dustin Penner was looking to get back on the scoreboard. Penner passes Gaborik taking third in the league in points with 19 and only 2 points behind Kopitar for 2nd. He wacked one out of the air after Horcoff made a one timer slap shot attempt at Howard. Just over three minutes later he picks up a power play assist on Hemsky's goal. He grabs his third point just 58 seconds into the second period on Hemsky's breakaway goal.

WINGS-
Pavel Datsyuk was hot as usual with a pair of assists. He played 23:05 minutes and went 50% on the face-off circle.
Helm gets the first Wings goal 6:15 into the second period. Not only was this the Wings first goal but it was his first regular season career goal ever. He has six playoff goals in 41 playoff games and now has one regular season goal in 29
games played.

Valtteri Filppula also hits a milestone by grabbing an assist for his 100th career NHL point.

SAVE OF THE GAME

Letting in four goals isn't exactly solid in net for Jimmy Howard but in all fairness, he was facing an Oilers team buzzing with momentum in a lot of the game.

His best save of the game was on a hard slap shot from Tom Gilbert just inside the blue line at 8:16 in the second period. Howard had to be huge to keep this one out as he sucked in the puck like a sponge and robbed Gilbert from putting the Oilers up 5-1.

Khabibulin also had his fair share of saves on the match and saw a total of 45 shots. He had to be quick on the penalty kill just five minutes into the third period. He stopped huge shots from dangerous Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Williams .

THE 4TH STAR

Third star went to Shawn Horcoff with a goal and two assists and a +2 on the evening. Horcoff played in 30 shifts which saw 22:25 mintes of ice time. Darren Helm earned the second star tonight getting the first goal for the Wings in the second period giving his team some light. He also assisted in the game tying goal from Eaves. The first star without a doubt went to Dustin Penner with a four point night. Dustin is now in third place in the league for points and only two behind Anze Kopitar of LA.

The fourth star could have gone to many Oilers or Wings for that matter but Ales Hemsky sure deserves something with his three point contribution tonight.  Hemsky scored the Oilers third and fourth goals tonight with the first one coming on the power play. He also got one of the helpers on the second goal scored by Dustin Penner. Hemsky now has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. He leads the team in assists and is second in points behind Penner.

STAT OF THE NIGHT

Dustin Penner moves up the ladder to 19 points this season which puts him in third in the NHL. He is only two points behind Anze Kopitar of the LA Kings. He now has nine goals and 10 assists and holds a +9.

QUOTABLE

Oilers head coach Pat Quinn:

"We had some fear take over. They started checking and we didn't answer it. They started checking and we stopped checking, then they started to go by us. We started being the team they were in the first period."

"We have a forecheck we were supposed to follow. We invented another one tonight."

Oilers forward JF Jacques:

"Even if we have a one goal or five goal or four goal lead like tonight, we still need to play the same game. That's something we really need to work on instead of letting them just drift away and skate." said Jacques.
"We knew that if there is a team that can do it, it's Detroit.  We let them skate for a couple of periods there and it almost cost us."
