Under the Scope: Oilers vs. Predators

by Travis Knee / Edmonton Oilers

With the Oilers trailing 1-0 heading into the third, Taylor Hall would give them the spark they needed with a powerplay goal at 5:29. Taking a beautiful cross-ice feed from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Hall would make no mistake, going top corner with Pekka Rinne out of position.

With the game tied 1-1, Oilers fans got a glimpse of some past magic when Ryan Smyth scored to make it 2-1. Driving hard to the net, Smyth took a terrific saucer pass from captain Shawn Horcoff and proceeded to deke to his backhand, beating Rinne. The goal would prove to be the game-winner, giving the Oilers their second win on the year.

It seems only fitting that on his own bobblehead night, Oilers forward Ryan Smyth would step up and lead his team to victory. Smyth recorded two points(1G,1A) in the contest, including the game-winning goal to complete the Oilers comeback.

On a night that saw his linemate get most of the attention, Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff had his fingerprints all over this victory. Playing 21:32, Horcoff led the way for the Oil with three assists, including a pretty saucer pass to set up Smyth on the winner.

In need of some momentum to start the third, Oilers forward Ryan Jones would provide just that. Three minutes into the period, Jones got in hard on the forecheck, hitting Predators defensemen Jonathon Blum behind the net. The hit would give the Oilers life as they came back to win the game.

With the Oilers having scored eight goals on the 2011-2012 season, a player named Ryan has factored in on all eight. The Oilers have gotten goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins(4), Ryan Smyth(2), Ryan Jones(1) and Taylor Hall(1). Nugent-Hopkins did have an assist on the Hall goal, thus keeping the "Ryan Streak" alive!

" The veteran players have to step up and pull you through games like this"
