Under the Scope: Oilers vs. Kings

by Kristi Hennessy / Edmonton Oilers

The turning point of the game came at 15:27 in the third period and unfortunately it was not a turn for the best for our Oilers. They battled hard to get back in the game with goals from Souray and Potulny who tied the game 2-2 earlier in the third. It was a lucky break for the Kings tonight. It started with a snap shot from Williams at Deslauriers. Then Penner had to block a shot from Greene. The puck then found it's way onto the stick of Sean O'Donnell who snapped one home from 51 feet out. Frolov and Williams picked up the assists on the game winner. Kings improve their record to 22-11-3 for 47 points.

OILERS - Sheldon Souray, Ryan Potulny and Andrew Cogliano were three of our strongest on the ice tonight. Souray gets the first goal for the Oilers at 12:17 of the second period. The play started with Potulny winning the face-off in the Kings zone. Souray got the puck and took his deadly slap shot which found it's way into the back of the net. Potulny then tied the game 2-2 just four minutes into the third period. Potulny gets his 6th goal and 9th point in the 17 games he's played so far this year.

Brad Richardson did not score a goal in the first 26 games of the season however he has picked it up and found the back of the net four times in his last nine games. Richardson gets the Kings on the board just past the five minute mark in the opening period. He then assisted on the Kings second goal scored by Captain Dustin Brown.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick is playing very well for the Kings as of late. He improves his record to 8-1-1 with a 2.60 GAA and .904 save % over nine games. He picked up the first star for Dec.14th week.

Jonathan Quick has been huge for the Kings as of late. He had more than one occation as you can see from the picture to the right where he had to stand on his head to give the Kings the chance to win this game. He had a few mad scrambles where he didn't know where the puck was and managed to keep it on the other side of the line.

In the last three minutes in the second period, he
was faced with three shots on goal and two that just missed wide of the net. Greene gave up the puck to Nilsson who shot a wrist shot just wide of the net. Horcoff grabbed the puck and threw a backhand at Quick which stayed out. Then Dustin Penner had his way with it as well as Gilbert Brule but neither one could find the empty spot before the buzzer went off ending the second.

The fourth star of the night should be awarded to Ryan Potulny for his strong game tonight. Potulny saw 20 shifts and 17:02 of ice time in the match. He picked up an assist on Souray's goal to get the Oilers on the board and added a nice one of his own to tie things up 2-2 in the third. He records a +1 on the night and went 7 for 14 in the face off circle. Potulny improves to six goals and four assists for 10 points in 17 games this season. Potulny also had the lone goal for the Oilers against the LA Kings back on November 25th.

J.F Jacques is tied for 7th in the NHL in hits with 102. The hard hitter has only played in 26 games and is averaging four hits a game.
Denis Grebeshkov needs just 4 more games to hit his 200th career NHL game. He also only needs 4 PIM to hit his 100th career PIM.

Oilers Head Coach Pat Quinn:

"We do some good things right but not enough things to win hockey games."
"I haven't been mad at all this year yet but I'm mad right now."

Kings Captain Dustin Brown:

"I don't really have a stat for Quicker but he has a tendancy to make the saves that he's not supposed to make. That can really change the game. It doesn't show up on the stats sheet but when you make big saves like that it can change momentum and we thrive off of that."

117- Dustin Brown is tied for 1st in the NHL for hits with 117.
208-  Consecutive games played for Anze Kopitar. (March 21, 2007 to present.)

200- Alexander Frolov is 5 assists away from hitting 200 with the Kings.

5- Anze Kopitar is 5 goals away from marking his 100th career goal.

110- Matt Greene is 4th in the league for hits with 110.
