Under the Scope: Oilers vs. Flyers

by Travis Knee / Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers got a solid outing between the pipes from Devan Dubnyk and were able to blank a strong Flyers team 2-0 on Thursday night. Edmonton got goals from both Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall and were able to hold off Philadelphia down the stretch.

For Edmonton, it was a second strong effort in a row for a win. Fresh off Tuesday's 6-1 win over Calgary, the Oilers seem to be settling into the role of spoiler for teams battling for playoff spots.

All you need to know and more as we go Under the Scope:

With the Oilers already up 1-0, Jordan Eberle would win a battle in the Flyers zone and come up with the puck. Jordan then carried it to the slot before letting go a wrist-shot, sneaking it past Bryzgalov. That would give the Oilers all the offence they needed for a 2-0 win.

67 The faceoff winning percentage for the Oilers overall in tonight's game. They won 38 of 57 draws.
60 The point total for Jordan Eberle now this season. He is the first Oiler to record 60 points in 56 games or less since Doug Weight.
86 The faceoff winning percentage for Eric Belanger in tonight's game, the best by any player in the game. He would win 12 of the 14 draws he took.

With the Oilers on the powerplay in the second period in a scoreless game, Taylor Hall would score what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. A wide point shot found its way back out in front where Hall was there to pounce on the loose puck to score his 22nd of the season.

Devan Dubnyk stood tall from start to finish in this one. Dubnyk stopped all 35 shots he faced from the Flyers, picking up the shutout and the 2-0 victory. He would also be named the 'first star' of the game for his efforts.

Although you will rarely find his name in the 'points' column, Darcy Hordichuk can help his team in other ways. In tonight's game, Hordichuk brought the fans to their feet with a highly entertaining fight. Hordichuk took on the much larger Jody Shelley and gave him everything he could handle.

With the way the schedule works out in the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers don't come to Edmonton all that often. In this case, they are probably fine with that. The Flyers have not won a game in Edmonton since the 2000-2001 season.

"It developed the minute I saw his name on the roster."

-- Darcy Hordichuk on how the fight with Shelley developed.
