Under the Scope: Oilers vs. Blues

by Marc Ciampa / Edmonton Oilers

The Ryans (Smyth, Nugent-Hopkins and Jones) combined to score two goals and three assists, factoring in each Oilers tally as the home side doubled-up the visiting St. Louis Blues 4-2 Sunday night at Rexall Place.

Nikolai Khabibulin got the start in goal, posting 28 saves and propelling the Oilers to their fifth straight win.

All you need to know and more as we go Under the Scope:

After the Blues scored to tie the game 3:58 into the middle frame, the Oilers responded less than four minutes later on a goal by Ryan Smyth but the turning point came six minutes after the go-ahead marker as Jordan Eberle redirected a Taylor Hall pass off his skate and in past St. Louis netminder Jaroslav Halak. The goal really continued the team's momentum en route to a 16-shot second period and ultimately a 4-2 win.

Early in the opening period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins made a seeing-eye pass from the right circle right onto the stick of Shawn Horcoff who quickly fired it in to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.

What more can you say about Ryan Smyth on this night? The veteran winger scored two goals and had plenty of attempts to complete the hat trick. He had five shots on goal in 19:48 of ice time.

Eric Belanger took plenty of abuse on this night but kept bouncing back up. Several times he was crunched along the boards only to skate off the ice gingerly but he continued to stay in the game. Belanger led all pivots at 80% in the faceoff dot.

Heading into tonight, the Oilers were winless when leading after one period this season with a record of 0-2-2. They were up 1-0 following the opening period tonight so with the 4-2 win, they were able to crack that goose egg.

Meanwhile, they're unbeaten (6-0-0) when tied or trailing after 20 minutes.

"He's such a good leader. He's a heart-and-soul guy. Your young guys need to see that if we're going to win a Cup one day."

-- Oilers head coach Tom Renney on the character of veteran winger Ryan Smyth
