Under the Scope: Oilers vs. Blackhawks

by Kristi Hennessy / Edmonton Oilers

The Blackhawks stated before the game that they weren't happy with their play as of late. Captain Jonathan Toews decided to do something about it and came out feisty and hungry. Before tonight's game, Toews was second in the Blackhawks in points with 42 (17G, 25 A) in 46 games.  Well, he came out and scored in almost as many seconds as he has points. With just 44 seconds on the clock, Toews fires one past Deslauriers and Kane notched his first assist. Blackhawks fired away all night.

After Pisani's late goal in the second period, what momentum the Oilers gathered carried into the third period. Just 5:22 into the period, Niklas Hjalmarsson coughed the puck up after Chicago had won the face-off. The puck shot over to Patrick O'Sullivan who spotted Potulny racing up the center toward the net. Making no mistake, O'Sullivan whiped a nice pass onto Potulny's stick who fired the puck past Cristobal Huet.

Patrick Kane picked up assists on the first two Blackhawks goals of the game. His first one came just 44 seconds into the game.

Kane passes the 200 point marker in his NHL career and is now at 202. Kane moves into sixth in the NHL, and leads all American-born players, with 59 points (21G,38A).

Today's meeting at Rexall Place was the sixth contest of an eight-game, 15-day road trip during which the Blackhawks will travel almost 7,800 miles before returning to Chicago. The team will not play another game at the United Center until Feb. 3.

"They're a good team at controlling the game, they have the puck a lot and it makes it hard on the opposition. When you're always trying to get it or working to get it back."
  - Oilers Ryan Potulny comments on the game and the style of the Blackhawks.

"They use their speed to check, and we're doing the fancy drop crap that usually changes all momentum. You never get momentum if you never get them to play defense.
-Oilers Head Coach Pat Quinn on the 'Hawks after the game.
