Under the Scope: Oilers at Blue Jackets

by Wendy Mach / Edmonton Oilers

A quick goal early in the second period from Magnus Paajarvi led to a Columbus goalie change as Steve Mason was pulled and replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky. The Oilers were unable to beat Bobrovsky and Blue Jackets forward Jack Johnson provided the tying goal in the middle of the second to even the score. Overtime solved nothing and they went to a shootout where Bobrovsky stopped both Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky to give the Blue Jackets a come-from-behind win. The Oilers were outshot 38-29 as they leave Columbus with a single point.

Take a closer look at the game as we go Under The Scope:

Once Magnus Paajarvi scored to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead on only eight shots, Blue Jackets starter Steve Mason was replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky shut the door the rest of the way, stopping 21 shots in regulation and overtime, and putting the breaks on slick shootout moves by Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky en route a 4-3 Columbus win.

With the game tied 2-2 to start the second period, Sam Gagner began a dangerous-looking rush with Magnus Paajarvi. Gagner cut across the front of the net and passed across to Paajarvi, who then found the back of the net with a slick chip shot. The goal was Paajarvi’s fourth of the season, which gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead.

Jeff Petry scored the Oilers' first goal of the game, giving him his fifth point of the season. He also registered his first NHL fight with a first-period tilt against Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert. Petry ended the night with a +2 rating in 19:18 of ice time.

The Blue Jackets' leading goal-getter, Vinny Prospal, extended his team lead in that category by collecting his fourth power-play marker of the season late in the first period. Propsal added an assist on the night in 17:22 of ice time and is now only one point shy of 750 career points.

Lasting only 20:31 between the pipes, Blue Jackets netminder Steve Mason was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots. The 24-year-old has now been pulled in four of his last five games vs. Edmonton.

“I just tried to calm the puck down. It was rolling and he made a great save.”
