Trivia Question turns into $57,000 “Life-Changer” for Oilers Fan

Who knew answering the question, “Who led the Minnesota North Stars in scoring in 1990-91?” would eventually lead to a $57,000 payout. Oilers fan Mike Edwards was lucky enough to find out.

The Westlock resident tuned into Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer Tuesday morning and called in when Stauffer announced a trivia contest for listeners. Edwards soon found himself correctly answering the question on air and walked away with two tickets for the Oilers versus Minnesota Wild game that night.

With tickets in tow, choosing a companion for the evening was as easy as answering “Dave Ganger”.

“I took my five-year-old son to his first game ever,” said Edwards.

Upon entering Rexall Place, the pair did what thousands of fans like to do, purchase a 50/50 ticket before settling into their seats. While the Oilers weren’t able to edge the Wild, Edwards caught his own lucky break when the winning 50/50 number was plastered on the screen in the middle of the third period.

“You look at the number on the big screen and think, ‘nah, no way,’ and then you say, ‘hey that’s close’. I looked at it and holy crap, I won.”

Sitting in section 124, Edwards grabbed his son and ran for the Oilers Game Day office to claim his prize of $57,307.50.

“It was funny, she asked me to sign the paper and I know I signed my name but it probably was nowhere near what I’m used to signing it as, I was shaking so badly.”

Edwards’ first step of action upon receiving his cheque was phoning his wife to tell her the exciting news. From there on in, his phone was a constant source of ringing with congratulations from friends and family.

While it’s only been 15 hours since Edwards’ bank account drastically inflated, he chuckled when asked if he knew how he was going to spend it.

“We pretty well have it all spent right now; a holiday trailer, trip, we put some away. It’s a life-changer for sure.”
