Tom Gazzola's 2015 Mock Draft

by Tom Gazzola / Edmonton Oilers

Related mock drafts: Tom Gazzola | Bob Stauffer | Jack Michaels | Chris Wescott
1 EDM Connor McDavid, C, Erie (OHL) A gift from the hockey gods.
2 BUF Jack Eichel, C, Boston University (NCAA) No slouch. Will be a tremendous player for a long time.
3 PHX Dylan Strome, C, Erie (OHL)
Coyotes need more offensively gifted players as they move through their time of transition.
4 TOR Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon (WHL) Leafs looking for defencemen. Provorov came over from Russia and proved he can play the North American game.
5 CAR Noah Hanifin, D, Boston College (NCAA) Could be an integral part of the ‘Canes blue line for years to come.
6 NJD Mitchell Marner, RW, London (OHL)
Shifty, slick and packs an offensive punch. Devils have a new regime, and maybe break from their traditional defensive mindset.
7 PHI Pavel Zacha, C, Sarnia (OHL) Big, strong, and explosive with an offensive touch.
8 CBJ Zack Werenski, D, Michigan (NCAA) Smooth skating American defence man who could one day compliment Ryan Murray on the Jackets’ back end.
9 SJS Mikko Rantanen, RW, (SM Liiga) The hulking Finn showed that he can compete with the big boys in SM Liiga.
10  Thomas Chabot, D, Saint John (QMJHL) Puts up numbers. Avs could use a solid left-shot defence man.
11 FLA Lawson Crouse, LW, Kingston (OHL) Versatile winger who can put up numbers, or hurt you with thundering physical play.
12 DAL Mathew Barzal, C, Seattle (WHL) A playmaker that might compliment guys lake Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin in the near future.
13 Timo Meier, RW, Halifax (QMJHL) A serious offensive threat that has some struggles in the defensive zone. Meier could be a guy that eventually boosts the Kings goals per game production up to the top half of the league.
14 Jakub Zboril, D, Saint John (QMJHL) The Czech defender has adapted quite well to the North American game.
15 CGY Oliver Kylington, D, Farjestad (Sweden) Flames have a solid supply of talented young forwards. Kylington boosts the defensive prospect depth.
16 EDM
(From PIT)
Evgeny Svechnikov, LW, Cape Breton (QMJHL) Since we can’t make trades in this mock draft and have to pick as is, I’ll say the Oil take the big Russian centreman.
17 WPG Travis Konecny, C, Ottawa (OHL) The Jets are a big-bodied team, and despite his size, Konecny plays larger than he is. Described as a leader with a passion to succeed.
18 Jeremy Roy, D, Sherbrooke (QMJHL) A powerplay quarterback with a heavy shot. Could give the Sens a solid 1-2 punch on the back end and perhaps take some of the load off of workhorse Erik Karlsson at some point.
19 DET Jacob Larsson, D, Frolunda (Sweden) The Red Wings have had a lot of success with Swedish defencemen. Larsson could be a guy that helps stabilize the blueline.
20 Nick Merkley, RW, Kelowna (WHL) Graceful, he is not. But he knows how to get the job done, and how to get it done well. A gifted playmaker that sacrifices the body to make things happen.
21 BUF
(From BUF)
Kyle Connor, C, Youngstown (USHL) Speedy forward who knows how to make a play and uses his wheels to his advantage. Some call him a game breaker that needs some time to let his body and overall game mature.
22 WSH Denis Guryanov, RW, Togliatti 2 (Russia) Highly skilled Russian that some worry might not commit to the NHL. Playing with countryman and superstar Alex Ovechkin might make the decision easier.
23 VAN Daniel Sprong, RW, Charlottetown (QMJHL) Dutch sniper who could help bolster the Canucks offence. The Sedins along with top goal-scorer Radim Vrbata are all 34 years old. Sprong could come in at the right time with the next wave of talented Canucks prospects for a smooth transition.
24 TOR
(From NSH)
Jansen Harkins, C, Prince George (WHL) Heart and soul is part of Harkins game, something the Leafs lacked for a good chunk of last season. Works for his offence. Set a new franchise record for assists (59) in Prince George in 2014-15.
25 WPG
(From STL via BUF)
Brock Boeser, RW, Waterloo (USHL) Decent size, solid skill set. Committed to playing right down the road at UND next season. Fits the “Jet mould”.
26 MTL Jake DeBrusk, LW, Swift Current (WHL) Interviewed with every team except for L.A. He’s got a nose for the net and finds ways to score. Not the same type of player as his old man.
27 ANA Paul Bittner, LW, Portland (WHL) Huge size. Put up great numbers on a very good Portland team. Power forward potential that fits the Anaheim Ducks mould.
(From NYR)
Jeremy Bracco, RW, USNTDP (USHL) Gets knocked for being small. Has incredible offensive abilities. Sound familiar in Tampa?
29 PHI
(From TBL)
Colin White, C, US U-18 (USHL) Dubbed a strong two-way player that has some grit in his game. Headed to Boston College next season. Also praised for his leadership abilities.
30 PHX
(From CHI)
Joel Eriksson Ek, C, Farjestad (Sweden) A tall Swede that doesn’t mind the muck it up along the wall. Has offensive upside. Yotes might be looking for this type of forward.
31 BUF Ilya Samsonov, G, Magnitogorsk (Russia) Dubbed a future starter in the NHL. Sabres could use goaltending help. Will Samsonov even be available at 31?
32 PHX Noah Juulsen, D, Everett (WHL) Puck rushing defenceman with decent hands that eats up a lot of minutes. Put up 52 points and 42 PIMs in 68 games with the Silvertips last season in the dub.
33 EDM Mackenzie Blackwood, G, Barrie (OHL) Adding depth to the prospect goaltending pool. Samsonov is the guy most would probably want, but don’t think he’ll be there at 33 for the Oil to grab him.
