The Big Apple

by Tom Gilbert / Edmonton Oilers
We just got back from this morning's practice and I thought I would sit down for a few minutes to write my blog. Our flight was delayed because of fog in Pittsburgh but we finally arrived in New York late Thursday night. Yesterday we had a good day off and I did a bit of shopping on 5th Avenue with Rob and Kyle. I didn't go too crazy and only bought two pairs of shoes. I'm wearing one of them now actually.

All the moms and wives came in last night. Andrew, Sam and I are taking our moms out to a play tonight. I think it's called In The Heights. I don't really know what to expect but I hope my mom likes it. The last time we spent time together was during training camp when she came out to visit me in Edmonton for a bit. I don't get to see her too often during hockey season so this is a nice treat.

One of the big stories on this trip happened in Pittsburgh. One of our media guys got mugged on the street and he showed up at the rink the next day with a busted lip. I guess Pittsburgh can be a pretty rough town in some places.

New York is great though. Even though it's raining today the restaurants are great and the night life is unbelievable. It's funny walking around with Kyle because he's from a small town and not used to life in a big city like this. As soon as we stepped out onto the street, he kept asking “Why are they honking all the time? Why don't they stop honking? I can't even stand it!” I love all the action so I guess we're pretty different that way.

The only other thing I wanted to mention is that I've seen two movies on this trip. We saw Zack & Miri in Columbus (I think) and it was hilarious. I would recommend it to anybody as long as you're okay with the subject matter. Then we saw Max Payne in Pittsburgh I think. It was awful. Mark Wahlberg is making a steady decline in quality of movies in my opinion.

Anyway, that's about all I have to say. We've got two big games this weekend and we're looking forward to big wins before heading back home. It's been a long trip.

Talk to you next week.
