Edmonton, Alta. – The Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada and Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) announced today that Syncrude Canada Ltd. will become the title sponsor of the 2016 Oil Country Championship with AECON Group Inc., as presenting sponsor.
The Syncrude Oil Country Championship presented by AECON will take place July 25-31, 2016 at Glendale Golf and Country Club, with all net proceeds from the event going towards Fort McMurray wildfire relief efforts, following the cancellation of the Syncrude Boreal Open presented by AECON earlier this spring.
“We’re fortunate to be working with community-minded sponsors like Syncrude and AECON, who care not only about making this a fantastic golf tournament, but using it as a catalyst to create a positive impact in the Fort McMurray community. Along with OEG, we look forward to making this a great event in July,” said Mackenzie Tour President Jeff Monday.
“As we remain focused on returning home and supporting Fort McMurray as it rebuilds, we’re glad to remain part of Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada,” said Mark Ward, President and CEO of Syncrude. “We’re also grateful that money raised from this event will support relief efforts across our region.”
To complement the tournament, the RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray was announced today, giving participants the opportunity to experience one of the premier golf courses in Western Canada alongside Mackenzie Tour professionals during the final round while raising money for the Fort McMurray region’s wildfire relief efforts. The walk will be an approximate 3-kilometre guided tour of the course during the final round of the Oil Country Championship on Sunday, July 31, 2016 with fans walking toward the final hole alongside the tournament leaders.
The RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray presented by Global Edmonton will raise important funds for the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF), who will direct net proceeds to Some Other Solutions (SOS) for Crisis Prevention in Fort McMurray. SOS helps prevent, intervene and support individuals of all ages who are dealing with life challenges. Through counselling, child and youth programming and 24-hour crisis support, SOS will work to ensure the people of Wood Buffalo have the tools and resources to cope effectively with crisis.
“The long-term impact of the wildfire on the people of Fort McMurray is, in many ways, still unknown,” said Jeff Boyd, Regional President, RBC and title sponsor of the charity walk. “RBC is committed to doing everything we can to aid and support those affected as they recover and rebuild.”
The Syncrude Oil Country Championship presented by AECON was originally announced in January 2016, adding golf to OEG’s expanding roster of sports and entertainment properties, which includes the Edmonton Oilers (NHL), Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL), Bakersfield Condors (AHL), Norfolk Admirals (ECHL) and Silver Pictures Entertainment.
“Many of our friends, family, neighbours and fans call Fort McMurray home and Oilers Entertainment Group cares deeply about their entire community. We’re proud to help them rebuild and will continue to rally around the cause for this inaugural Syncrude Oil Country Championship,” said Bob Nicholson, CEO and Vice Chair, Oilers Entertainment Group. “The funds raised during this great tournament are going to be really important for Northern Alberta’s recovery and we’re looking forward to a successful week in their honour.”
