Strudwick named Oilers nominee for 2009 Bill Masterton Trophy

by Edmonton Oilers Press Release / Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) has named defenceman Jason Strudwick as the Edmonton Oilers nominee for the 2009 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The Masterton Trophy, awarded since the 1967-68 season, is given annually to the player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey”. The PHWA chapters from all 30 NHL teams nominate one player from the team they cover and the winner of the award is selected by a poll among the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season schedule.

The Masterton Trophy will be awarded at the 2009 NHL Awards broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel Las Vegas on June 18, 2009.

As noted in the release from the NHL and PHWA, “Strudwick has played a blue collar role in the NHL for a long time, annually having to earn a roster spot and always having to prove he continues to merit one. He plays a hard, physical game, doing a lot of the thankless work that enables his more celebrated teammates to flourish. A locker room leader who shows younger players what it means to be a professional, he also has readily learned to play forward as well as his natural defence to make himself more versatile.”

Strudwick signed as a free agent with Edmonton on July 10, 2008. The 6’4”, 225 pound defencemen is in his 12th NHL season and has scored two goals and seven assists with 60 penalty minutes in 68 games in his first season with the Oilers.

The 33-year-old native of Edmonton has played 556 NHL games since turning pro with the New York Islanders in 1995-96. He has scored 13-34-47 and registered 738 career penalty minutes during his career that has seen him play with the Islanders, Vancouver, Chicago, New York Rangers and Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers 30th Anniversary Season is presented in part by the Rexall Family of Pharmacies, Bell, Molson Canadian, ATB Financial and Ford.
