Edmonton Oilers defenceman Sheldon Souray is one of 15 players named today to the Western Conference roster for the 57th NHL All-Star Game to be held at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Sunday, January 25th (4:00 pm MST).
This will be the third NHL All-Star Game appearance for the Oilers assistant captain and a homecoming of sorts. Souray’s first two all-star appearances came in 2004 and 2007 when he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
Souray has scored a goal and two assists with seven shots in his previous two NHL All-Star Game appearances. He scored an assist in the 2004 game at St. Paul, Minnesota helping the Eastern Conference All-Stars to a 6-4 win and then netted a goal and an assist at Dallas in 2007.
Other current Oilers to appear in the NHL All-Star Game include Shawn Horcoff
(2008), Dwayne Roloson (2004 with Minnesota) and Lubomir Visnovsky (2007 with Los Angeles).
Now in his second season with the Oilers, Souray is currently second in on the team scoring list and ranks fourth in scoring among NHL defencemen with 12-16-28 in 37 games. His 12 goals ties him for second among NHL blueliners and he is also tied for second with seven powerplay goals.
The roster additions were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, after consultation with League General Managers.
The 2009 NHL All-Star Weekend in Montreal will celebrate the Montreal Canadiens’ Centennial season with live national broadcasts of the Honda/NHL SuperSkills event on Saturday, January 24th, and the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, January 25th on CBC and RDS in Canada and VERSUS in the United States.
