Souray named Assistant Captain

The Edmonton Oilers have named Sheldon Souray as an assistant captain for the 2008-09 season.

The 32-year-old defenceman will be one of four players to wear the “A” in Edmonton’s 30th Anniversary season. Souray will join Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky and Steve Staios as assistants to team captain Ethan Moreau.

Souray and Staios will be the Oilers’ assistant captains for road games, while Horcoff and Hemsky will wear the “A” for home games.

Souray enters his second season with the Oilers. He was limited to 26 games with Edmonton in 2007-08 due to injury, scoring 3-7-10 with 36 penalty minutes. The Elk Point, Alberta native has scored 69-127-196 with 857 penalty minutes in 532 career games since making his NHL debut with the New Jersey Devils in 1997-98.
