IT'S TIME! The new #Oilers season is officially upon us as our boys open 2016-17 with a home-and-home #BattleOfAlberta series, starting Wednesday with the first-ever regular season game at Rogers Place (@rogersplace). In this week's #OilCountry social media roundup, we crown our 15th captain in franchise history, get you caught up on a pair of contests with our partners, welcome a new player to the team and shine our weekly fan spotlight.
The much-anticipated announcement of the 15th captain in franchise history finally arrived on Wednesday as second-year superstar Connor McDavid will don the C on his jersey! Oilers fans and players alike showered the team's new leader with praise and wished him well as he takes the team into battle this season.
WELCOME KRIS RUSSELL
It was a busy Friday night for the Oilers as they traded forward Nail Yakupov to the St. Louis Blues and then signed free agent veteran defenceman Kris Russell a mere two hours later. Yakupov expressed his thanks to the team and the fans via social media following the trade, while the Caroline, AB native Russell received a warm welcome back to his home province.
Speaking of the brand new season, our friends at Canadian Tire want to hook up one lucky fan with $1,000 to spend in their store, two tickets to next Sunday's game against the Buffalo Sabres and a couple of player-signed jerseys. All you have to do to enter is visit an Edmonton-area CT location, pick up your free inaugural season decal, take a photo of where you decide to stick it and post it on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Make sure to tag us in your point and include #BackToHockey. You have until midnight Wednesday to post your photo, just like Hunter did this week!
We have a winner! Dozens upon dozens of fans flocked to Edmonton-area Liquor Depot locations over the past couple of weeks to snap selfies with the Molson Canadian contest display for a chance to win a trip to the #HeritageClassic in Winnipeg. Congratulations to our winner Greg Townley who will be repping the Oil in the great outdoors Oct. 22-23 at Investors Group Field.
OIL COUNTRY SPOTLIGHT
The cold don't bother these fans anyway! Edmonton got a premature blast of winter this weekend, but some Oilers faithful made the best of the frosty situation by building snowmen and, of course, including their favourite team in the festivities.
