Welcome to the third instalment of the weekly Oilers social media blog! The 2015-16 season is fully on at this point, and what a week it was with the Oil rattling off three consecutive wins over teams we’ve been snake-bit against in recent years. We also embarked on a major charitable initiative this past week and are getting ready for a couple of really fun fan-driven contests. Enjoy this week’s social media roundup!

One of our most important home games of the season occurred on Friday night with Hockey Fights Cancer, as we hosted the Washington Capitals. And while the numbers on the scoreboard didn’t end up in the home team’s favour (the Oil dropped a 7-4 decision), tens of thousands of dollars were raised for the Kids With Cancer Society (@kwcsyeg) and Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (@Oil_Foundation).

Hockey Fights Cancer is an NHL-wide initiative geared towards raising awareness and funds to combat the deadly disease. On the fundraising front, the Oilers Ladies (wives and girlfriends) as well as Oilers staff members sold limited edition toques for $20 on the concourse during Friday’s game, with proceeds benefitting the aforementioned charities. Thanks to YOUR generosity, Oil Country, the toques sold out!

While the fundraising component was exclusive to Friday’s game, Oilers fans around the world participated in the awareness aspect throughout Hockey Fights Cancer week in Oil Country. Using #HockeyFightsCancer, we encouraged fans to tell us how they’ve been affected by cancer and who they fight for.

A $2,500 shopping spree to Henry Singer sounds pretty solid, wouldn't you agree? How about a chance to hang out with an Oilers player at Henry Singer and help him pick out a brand new suit?

Well, that’s exactly the contest we’re launching this week! Stay tuned to our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts for full details, but in the meantime, start thinking of which player you’d like to become a personal stylist for and get ready to SUIT UP!

We may still be a week out from Halloween, but due to schedule constraints, the Oilers actually held their team party this past Monday, and some players pulled out all the stops on their costumes.

Andrew Ference and wife Krista had some unreal makeup for their “Day of the Dead” look, as did Taylor Hall with his terrifying “Zipperface” portrayal. On the more playful side, Cam and Kelly Talbot rocked a solid “101 Dalmatians” couples getup.

As you get ready to celebrate Halloween later this week, we strongly encourage you to incorporate the Oilers into your costume or carve an Oilers-themed pumpkin! Tag @edmontonoilers in your tweets and Instagram photos along with #HockeyHalloween and we’ll be sharing some of our favourites with all of Oil Country. We might even have some tricks and/or treats to hook you up with!

Only because they’re on opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum, we’re going to have to name two GIFs of the week this week, courtesy our talented GIF creator @myregularface. First up, pure comedy as Lauri Korpikoski and Derek Dorsett got tangled up last Sunday and proceeded to become pairs figure skaters. And in the jaw-dropping highlight department, we’ve got Connor McDavid scoring his fourth goal of the season vs. Detroit on Wednesday. Wow. Just, wow.

As always, feel free to tweet your GIF requests to me (@ryanfrankson) or the main team account (@edmontonoilers) and we’ll do our best to make it happen!

Last but not least this week, our fan spotlight shines on Russell Manuel, who went pretty hardcore with his Oilers dedication and shaved our logo into the back of his head! Hopefully Russell got himself an Oilers toque on Friday in case those newly bare patches get a little chilly. Are you that hardcore? Got a photo you want to share? Post it on our Facebook page or tag @edmontonoilers in your tweet and/or Instagram post!
