Welcome to the first-ever instalment of #socOILmedia, the Edmonton Oilers social media blog!

My name is Ryan Frankson, Director of Social Media for the Oilers, and every Saturday I will have the pleasure of filling you in on all things social media in Oil Country. Every week, this will be your one-stop destination to catch up on social media contests, campaigns, fan-submitted content and much more.

As we embark on an historic season of Oilers hockey, our social media channels are the best way to stay connected with your team, as well as fellow fans across Oil Country.


The Oilers home opener is fast approaching, coming up on Thursday against the St. Louis Blues, as we’ll debut our WHA-inspired orange jersey to commemorate our final season at Rexall Place! Side note: Make sure you’re sharing your memories and paying homage to the historic arena by using #FarewellRexallPlace all season long!

Oil Country is going orange for the farewell season, and we want to make sure our fans are sufficiently geared up for the festivities! You’re going to have to earn it, though. Our series of #EarnYourOrange contests started on Thursday afternoon just prior to the season opener in St. Louis.

Since it was #NationalPoetryDay, we put the call out on Twitter for the best Oilers poems to kick-start the season. We received about 200 submissions and even got #EarnYourOrange trending Canada-wide at one point, ultimately crowning Oilers fan Scott Stevens (@notTHATsstevens) as our winner of an orange jersey shirt and a 2015 draft hat.

We switched the fun over to Snapchat on Friday and hosted our second-ever colouring contest! Fans were challenged to snap a photo that we posted of Luke Gazdic, gear him up with an orange jersey and snap it back to our account (edmontonoilers). We received about 75 entries and picked Nicole Gerspacher’s impressive creation as our winner, hooking her up with orange gear as well.

Both Steven and Nicole are entered to win an orange Oilers jersey crested with the name and number of the player of their choice. We’ve got five more chances to win and enter for the grand prize, so stay tuned to all of our channels!


Have you noticed an influx of replay GIFs on our Twitter handle this season? We’re really excited to have renowned hockey GIF creator Stephanie Vail (@myregularface) working with us this season to enhance the in-game Twitter experience for our fans. Stephanie will be providing us with GIFs of goals, fights, bench reactions, player cellys and other game highlights all season.

Our favourite GIF from this past week’s action has to be the unreal passing play Ryan Nugent-Hopkins executed during our preseason finale last Saturday in Vancouver. The Nuge showed off both his skills and smarts with this remarkable pass off the wall to himself before he set up Benoit Pouliot for a highlight-reel goal.


It’s no secret we’ve got some of the most passionate fans in the NHL here in Oil Country, so we must acknowledge the Oilers faithful every week with our favourite fan photo!

As the excitement for the start of the 2015-16 season hit its peak this past week, we had hundreds of epic fan pics to choose from, but this shot of Kim Wilson’s son’s “game face” takes top honours. This little man could definitely give Pittsburgh’s #BuckleUpBaby a run for this money.

Runner-up shout-out to Oilers fan Shanalee’s twin girls in their homemade McDavid onesies.

Your favourite hockey team and your beloved pets? It really doesn’t get much better than that. We’re proud to partner with the preferred builder of the Oilers, Coventry Homes, to showcase your pets and support the Edmonton Human Society.

On the first Monday of every month, we’ll select an Oilers fan’s pet decked out in orange and blue attire to feature on Twitter and Facebook. For every like, comment, share, retweet and favourite the photo receives, Coventry Homes will donate $1 to the Edmonton Human Society. The goal for the season is $25,000, and we got off to a great start this month thanks to Jo-Ann Stepanick’s little pup Leroy.
