Time for another instalment of our weekly Oil Country social media blog! This week, we rallied together to support our neighbours in Fort McMurray displaced by the horrific wildfire. We also catch up with our seven Oilers players competing at the IIHF World Championship — including the return of GIF of the week — and pay our respects to a longtime fan.
We may do battle on the ice every season, but when our fans need us, the hockey community bands together in a wonderful way. Thousands of Albertans lost their homes and had to evacuate Fort McMurray this week due to a devastating wildfire that ripped through the city. But where there was immediate tragedy, there was also triumph as the NHL stepped up in a big way to help with relief efforts.
The Oilers have seven players competing at the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia, including Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall and Cam Talbot for Canada, Patrick Maroon and Matt Hendricks for USA, Andrej Sekera for Slovakia and Leon Draisaitl for Germany. Sekera and Hendricks are also the captains for their respective squads. Kudos, fellas! Team Canada
held a brief training camp in Prague before moving over to Russia for the tournament, and during one bus ride Hall snapped a selfie with McDavid to share with the world.
GIFS OF THE WEEK
The return of hockey in World Championship form means the return of our favourite GIFs from the past week! Canada opened the #IIHFWorlds
tournament with a decisive 5-1 win over the Americans, with Hall (goal), Maroon (goal) and Talbot (24 saves) all factoring in on the decision.
Thanks to the continued support and votes of Oilers fans all over the world, Connor McDavid advanced to the semifinal round of this year’s #NHL17CoverVote
! This week, he’s up against San Jose’s Joe Pavelski, so we need to keep the votes coming to get Connor into the championship round and one step closer to becoming the face of next season’s @EASPORTSNHL
game. Vote via web at nhl.com/covervote
and via Twitter with #NHL17McDavid
. Remember, Twitter votes count double on Thursdays!
