Welcome to another Oil Country social media roundup! This week, we check out Matt Hendricks going viral thanks to his jaw-dropping shot block, fill you in on a new Rogers road trip contest and marvel at Gene Principe’s dancing abilities. Make sure you check back next Saturday for a special #NHLAllStar
edition of the blog, as I’ll be on-site in Nashville for the festivities!
Matt Hendricks quickly turned into a hockey celebrity over the last two days after he blocked a shot in a rather unfortunate area during Thursday’s game against the Dallas Stars. Hendy took a slapper from Alex Goligoski square in the groin during the second period, which sent him to the ice in a great deal of pain. In true warrior fashion, he only missed a shift or two before coming back to finish his night.
After the game, Hendricks tweeted out a couple photos of his protective cup, which was severely dented and cracked upon impact, thanking the manufacturers for “saving my bacon”. The tweet went viral and his story appeared on sites like Mashable
, Bleacher Report
and Perez Hilton
ROGERS ROAD TRIP
Our good friends at Rogers
are sending some lucky Oilers fans to watch the team play in Anaheim on Friday, Feb. 26! All you have to do to enter is caption the Jordan Eberle goal video they’ve posted on their Facebook page. Follow the link in this post below for all the details and to find the Ebs video. Good luck!
GIF OF THE WEEK
Our beloved Sportsnet host Gene Principe
took his infamous pre-game intro to a new level of obscure and hilarious prior to Thursday’s game vs. Dallas. Since the Oilers shuffled their forward lines for the game, Gene executed a series of “line” dances, including the Macarena (pun on Iiro Pakarinen) and Bird Dance.
Oh, Gene. Never change.
OIL COUNTRY SPOTLIGHT
This week’s fan spotlight comes all the way from Finland as Instagram user Urheilujätkä tagged us in this photo of some Esa Tikkanen love from Käpylä Sports Park in Helsinki! The Finnish legend won four Stanley Cups with the Oilers and obviously has legions of fans in his homeland.
