Happy New Year, Oilers fans! Our first Oil Country social media blog of 2016 features a memorable moment from Thursday’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display, our top GIF highlights of the season so far and some Oilers players supporting their respective home countries at the World Junior Championship. Enjoy!

Typically the Oilers ring in the new year on the road, often with a #BattleOfAlberta game against the Flames, but this year we got to celebrate at home, including a post-game fireworks display following the matchup with the Anaheim Ducks. Fans captured some awesome photos of the fireworks, while one Oilers icon (Joey Moss) was loving every second of it from the home team bench.

From NHL milestones and clutch game-winners, to banner nights and legendary celebrations, here are our top five GIF highlights from the 2015 portion of the 2015-16 season. As always, if you see a GIF-worthy moment, tweet them to me (@ryanfrankson) or @edmontonoilers, and we’ll do our best to make it happen!

5. Slats to the rafters (Dec. 11 vs. NYR)

4. Nurse first-pump (Dec. 11 vs. NYR)

3. Eberle OT heroics (Dec. 4 vs. DAL)

2. Leon’s game-winner (Oct. 29 vs. MTL)

1. McDavid’s first of many (Oct. 13 vs. DAL)

Both Finland and Sweden posted victories during today’s quarterfinal round at the #WorldJuniors tournament in Helsinki, much to the pleasure of a pair of Scandinavian Oilers players. Iiro Pakarinen tweeted about his Finns following their win dramatic over Canada, while Oscar Klefbom sent a supportive note to his Swedes (featuring Oilers prospect William Lagesson) earlier in the week.

Oilers fan Derzak Nicolas posted a holiday greeting on our Facebook page all the way from Brussels, Belgium, earning our spotlight honour this week! Remember, get your photos into consideration by including @edmontonoilers in your tweets and Instagram posts, or posting them on our Facebook page.
