The dog days of summer are upon us but we’re inching closer to hockey season by the day, with excitement continuing to build for the inaugural Oilers season at Rogers Place! In this week’s social media roundup, we pay a visit to the final week of Oilers Hockey School, embrace Oil Country at the Olympics, see what some of our players were up and, of course, shine the spotlight on our awesome fans.

OILERS HOCKEY SCHOOL

Four weeks of learning and good times are officially in the books as the annual Oilers Hockey School presented by Rogers concluded with a visit to Leduc. Former captain Kelly Buchberger and current defenceman Brandon Davidson imparted their wisdom upon the kids this week.

#RIO2016

The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio have been going strong for more than a week now, and there have been a few #OilCountry connections thus far! Darnell Nurse’s younger sister Kia has led the Canadian women’s basketball team to three wins in their first four games, with an important final round-robin match against fellow 3-1 Spain on the schedule for Sunday. Kia, who’s just 20 years old, leads the Canadians with 11.8 points per game thus far. Meanwhile, at Copacabana beach, a couple of Oilers fans made sure to rep their favourite hockey team as they took in some beach volleyball action! And from one rising star to another, Connor McDavid sent some Twitter love to 16-year-old Canadian swimmer Penny Oleksiak after she became the youngest Olympic gold-medal winner in our nation’s history.

OFF-SEASON TRACKER

After paying a visit to Oilers Hockey School on Wednesday, Brandon Davidson headed back down south to Lethbridge to continue his off-season training, with his adorable niece and nephew stopping by for a visit. Out on the west coast, Milan Lucic is in his hometown of Vancouver and stopped by his favourite local meat shop to stock up on some protein. Over in Minnesota, Tyler Pitlick was doing some intense medicine ball training with fellow pros Nick Bjugstad and Ryan McDonagh, while Nail Yakupov also wrapped up some on-ice sessions in Russia. And last, but certainly not least, Connor McDavid issued a hand-eye challenge to Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista in his latest Canadian Tire promo.
