We’re headed down the home stretch for the 2015-16 Oilers season, and we’re all set to go out with a bang as we bid farewell to historic Rexall Place on Wednesday. In this week’s social media blog, we’ve got everything you need to know for the farewell festivities, updates on contests, top GIFs of the week and another awesome fan tweet in our spotlight. Enjoy!
The big day has finally arrived. After more than four decades of professional hockey, the final Oilers game at Rexall Place will be played this Wednesday as we host the Vancouver Canucks. If you’re coming to the game, remember the start time has been changed to 5pm MT to accommodate the post-game ceremony featuring more than 100 Oilers alumni in attendance to say goodbye to the rink.
There will also be a City of Edmonton celebration with many of the Oilers legends during the noon hour on Wednesday downtown at Sir Winston Churchill Square. Throughout the week, make sure you use #FarewellRexallPlace
when you post about the festivities!
Also, congratulations to our Canadian Tire
contest winners Ivan, Robert and Brendan, who posted their 15-second videos describing their favourite Rexall Place memories! We received many fantastic videos, which we’re going to compile and feature both in-game and on our social media channels on Wednesday.
Have you heard about our new contest with Sport Chek? They’re going to send an Oilers fan plus a guest to the 2016 NHL Draft in Buffalo! You’re going to have to work for it, though… To enter, submit a 15-second video with the hashtag #SweatBette
r showing us how you’re getting in shape for the Draft. Some street hockey? Crushing the treadmill? Let’s see it! Remember to tag us and @SportChek
in your video as well.
Hundreds of photo submissions later and we finally have our #BrickBestSeats
grand prize winner! Massive congrats to Angela Brown, who rocked the blue and orange face-paint with her hubby and has won $5,000 to spend at The Brick
, as well as gold club seats for Wednesday’s Farewell Rexall Place game against the Canucks. Thanks for all your submissions!
GIFS OF THE WEEK
The Oilers only played one game this week, but Monday's matchup with the Ducks did feature Nail Yakupov getting the monkey off his back with a nifty one-timer goal. The Russian hadn’t lit the lamp since March 3 vs. Philadelphia, and his shot disappeared so quickly it took several seconds for him to even realize he scored, with a little help from linemate Leon Draisaitl.
