Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth
has been named the third star in the NHLs "Three Stars of the Week" for the week ending, Sunday, January 28, 2007.
Smyth tallied five points (two goals, three assists) in two games as the Oilers (24-22-4, 52 points) split a pair of games following the NHL All-Star break. He recorded an assist on the Oilers' lone goal in a 5-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Friday, January 26th and figured in each Edmonton goal with four points (two goals, two assists) in a 4-3 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, January 27th.
The performance matched his career single-game scoring high. Smyth, who leads the Oilers with 10 multiple point games this season, has scored four points in a game five times during his career, including three times in 2006-07.
Smyth earned an assist on Shawn Horcoff
's game-tying goal at 1:07 of the third period versus the Kings and tallied the game-winner, his fifth of the season, at 7:58. Smyth, who also posted one assist in the Western Conference's 12-9 victory over the Eastern Conference in the NHL All-Star Game Wednesday, January 24th, leads the Oilers in goals and points, scoring 25-16-41 in 40 games.
Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Mark Recchi was named the first star for the week and Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena was the second star.
Each Monday during the season, the NHL recognizes three players who delivered the Leagues top performances over the past week.
