The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) and Northlands are celebrating the success of the Rock and Wrap It Up program, run in conjunction with the Edmonton Food Bank.
EOCF and Northlands collect unused food from Oilers, Oil Kings games and all other events at Rexall Place and deliver it to the Edmonton Food Bank. As they prepare to send another shipment to the Bank, they are also taking pride in the success of the program.
More than 4,800 kilograms of food was gathered last hockey season, which made for more than 7-thousand meals for people in need. In addition, the Rock and Wrap It Up program helped the NHL Green program receive a special award.
“Edmonton’s Food Bank is such a vital part of our city and is utilized by many organizations we support,” said Natalie Minckler, EOCF Executive Director. “The Rock and Wrap It Up program was a natural fit for our organization, allowing us to use our resources to fight hunger in Edmonton.”
"As a community service organization, Northlands is pleased to be partnering with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation to support the Edmonton Food Bank in its initiative to help people in need in our community," added Northlands President and CEO Richard L. Andersen.
“Thanks to the support of the Oilers and the partners involved with this program we are able to continue to provide to more than 190 community agencies serving 300,000 snacks and meals each month of the year," said the Executive Director of the Food Bank, Marjorie Bencz.
Rock and Wrap It Up is part of a National Hockey League campaign to help fight hunger across North America. Edmonton’s 2010-11 total food donation ranked sixth in the NHL, second in Canada. The NHL food recovery initiative diverted 105,000 kilograms of food waste from landfills last season and provided more than 160,000 meals, earning the League the honour of winning Beyond Sport‘s 2011 “Sport for the Environment“ award.Edmonton Oilers hockey is presented in part by the Rexall Family of Pharmacies, Molson Canadian, ATB Financial, Cenovus Energy and Ford.
